Even Save The Queen’s Birthday Weekend

April 16, 2021
EVEN - Queen's Birthday Weekend
EVEN – Queen’s Birthday Weekend

While dumped PM Gough Whitlam might as well have been auditioning for the Sex Pistols when he said on November 11, 1975, “Well may we say ‘God Save the Queen’, because nothing will save the Governor-General!”, Melbourne’s royal rock’n’pop trio Even, who did include a stonking cover of the Sex Pistols’ “Pretty Vacant” on their recent Down The Shops covers collection, reckon that the Queen’s birthday at least is worth celebrating. Indeed, they reckon it is their Antipodean duty to do so, especially given that Prince Philip is now no longer around to start the party.

But with four shows across the holiday weekend at great venues in the inner North, South, East and West, “Even Save The Queen’s Birthday Weekend” is not just a celebration of a fabulous public holiday; it is also a celebration of the great rock’n’roll city that is Melbourne.

Even’s Friday to Monday run is gonna provide some right royal rocking with four hand-selected support acts adding a unique flavour to each show. New Cosmic Country queen Freya Josephine Hollick opens proceedings at the Gershwin Room on Friday the 11th. From then, it’s the tres glam Imperial Leather, featuring entities from both RRR and PBS-FM at the Westwood on Saturday the 12th; stranded Mississippi-based Canadian-Australian bluesy country singer-songwriter Meghan Maike on Sunday the 13th at the Leadbeater; and melancholy and melodious young trio of singer-songwriters the Folk Bitch Trio on Monday the 14th at the Northcote Social Club. Monday’s show is a matinée and under-18’s are allowed in if accompanied by an adult.

That is four great line-ups and a real celebration of Melbourne music, so we suggest you grab tickets to all four shows, explore the length and breadth of rockin’ town and make a proper long weekend of it!

Oh, and Even would also like it known that we’ve been working on album #8, and it’s coming along nicely.

DELIVERED – Live Streaming Festival

March 31, 2020
Delivered – Live Streaming Festival, 4 April 2020.

⭐️ EVEN LIVE STREAMING ⭐️
DELIVERED – Live Streaming Festival

Music and comedy lovers across the country who have seen tours, festivals and live shows cancelling in recent weeks can look forward to a new festival this weekend, and they can enjoy it all from the comfort of their own homes!

Featuring acclaimed solo artists Alex Lahey, Bob Evans, (Jedediah front man Kevin Mitchell), Ali Barter, Henry Wagons, indie favourites EVEN and internationally acclaimed blues singer C.W. Stoneking. As well as this there will be something for the kids with the Teeny Tiny Stevies.

They’ll be joined by four talented local comedians including Andy Saunders and Sami Shah for a night of live entertainment connecting Victorians through music, comedy, inspiring stories and advice from experts on dealing with isolation.

Streaming is free, although viewers will be encouraged to make a donation by purchasing a ticket through Oztix to view the stream which will help support the creative industries impacted by the coronavirus, including artists, managers, sound engineers and support staff. Tailored beverage packs from bushfire impacted regional wineries will also be on sale for delivery to enjoy during the festival.

Compounding the bushfires which hurt many regional communities, coronavirus social distancing measures means these towns are further isolated, making it harder to raise funds and continue the rebuilding and recovery efforts.

Regional towns across the country impacted by bushfires, drought and the ongoing coronavirus restrictions will be able to enjoy a night of live streaming music and comedy to help connect communities during these trying times.

Minister for Regional Development Jaclyn Symes welcomed the announcement of the Delivered, Live Streaming Festival with a host of music and comedy acts streaming live performances to regional communities all over Australia.

The Delivered, Live Streaming Festival has been launched in partnership with Handshake Agency and will be the first live streaming festival in support of our regional communities.

The stream will go live at 5pm on Saturday 4 April at www.deliveredlive.com.au.

The Meanies celebrate 30 years as a band, 25 years since 10% Weird, announce national tour

August 28, 2019
To hail 25 years since the release of their influential LP 10% Weird and a whopping 30 years as a band, Australian punk titans The Meanies have summoned the band back into Australia from all over the world to embark on a huge national tour, bringing acts like Tumbleweed, Civic, Glitoris and Dicklord along for the ride.

Treating punters to a live set stacked with tunes from their hefty back catalogue, the tour will kick off with a matinee show on Cup Day, Tuesday November 5 at the Corner, before zigzagging across Australia, playing shows in Castlemaine, NSW, South Australia, Queensland and Western Australia.

It was May 1989 when The Meanies first moved their music out of their rehearsal space and onto the stage, and fast became notorious as the most unruly and savage punk act the country had seen. Countless live shows saw the band cultivate a formidable local following and play with a veritable stack of international heavyweights, like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Bad Brains and Beastie Boys, to name a few.

Five years later and 10% Weird belted through the punk-rock stratosphere and into the laps of punk fans across the country. Released via Au Go Go, Munster Records (ES), Subway Records (DE) and Frontier Records (USA), the LP has long been regarded as the band’s magnum opus, an album symbolic of Melbourne’s chaotic beer-drenched punk-rock scene of the time and a record cited by countless bands as a major influence.

Fast-forward to 2019, and the band have flown into the country from all over the world to celebrate 30 years of recklessness, broken bones, excessive boozing and busted eardrums.

Tickets to The Meanies are on sale now.

EVEN 25 Years Anniversary Tour

July 30, 2019

Australia’s seminal indie-pop-rock trio EVEN have just turned 25 and to celebrate, the band have announced a string of headline gigs around the country before their national tour dates with long-time pals, The Dandy Warhols.

It’s been a quarter of a century since singer-songwriter / guitarist Ashley Naylor, drummer Matthew Cotter and bassist Wally Kempton first took the stage at North Fitzroy’s Empress of India Hotel, and seven studio albums later, the band have earned a solid reputation as one of the country’s most adored indie bands emerging from the ‘90s.

Significant rotation on triple j and frequent national and international touring saw Even amass a devoted and long-term fan base, who fast became charmed by the band’s sparkling guitar melodies and splendid power-pop hooks.

Kicking off in Melbourne on Thursday September 26 at Howler, The EVEN 25 Years anniversary tour will see the band cross over to Marrickville Bowlo on Friday September 27, before settling into Adelaide’s Jive Bar on Saturday October 12. Alongside the Dandy shows, EVEN will also perform at Scene & Heard Festival in Brisbane and Newcastle.

Tickets to the EVEN 25 Years Anniversary tour are on sale now. Stay tuned for more news from the EVEN camp soon.

Perth Power pop trio Rinehearts celebrate the release of their new album this June!

With an overall sound best described as a cross between The Replacements and Reigning Sound, Rinehearts have been delivering catchy tunes since forming in 2016. Long-time friends Guitarist and Vocalist Ben Ward, bass player Mitch Long and drummer Ross Di Blasio’s raw sound and memorable melodies quickly gained the attention of U.K label No Front Teeth Records who put out the band’s first 7” EP ‘Try Your Luck’ in December that same year.

Fast forward 12 months, and after trialling and refining new songs with local audiences, the band once again settled into Ross’ living room to record their debut album ‘Can’t Do Nothing’. The end result is 11 tracks that seamlessly bounce from one to the next, with distinct influences ranging from the sound of the latest single ‘You Don’t Have To Lie’, to 60s Stems/Byrds inspired numbers like ‘Can’t Seem to Help Myself’ and ‘Oneway Road’ to the undeniably captivating lead single and title track from the album ‘Can’t Do Nothing’.

Nick Craft supports Paul Dempsey for 5 sold out shows!

May 21, 2019
Post Image

Nick Craft is supporting Paul Dempsey for a 5 day run of sold out shows at the Gasometer Hotel in Melbourne.

Perhaps best known as songwriter, musician and front man for the psychedelic rock band Sidewinder, Nick recorded ‘Minerva’ with his brother and former band mate, Martin. The brothers formed Sidewinder as teenagers in the 90s, before releasing several acclaimed albums, and constantly touring the Hume Highway live circuit and as a fixture on festival line-ups including The Big Day Out and Homebake.

This record marks the first time they have worked together since Sidewinder, this time in very different capacities. Martin took on the roles of producer and arranger, taking Nick’s lyrically-driven songs performed on an estate sale nylon strong guitar into a new realm with his understated and sophisticated string arrangements. These arrangements were recorded with a crack squad of musicians in Los Angeles, using players who are more used to working on film soundtracks or with high profile artists such as Father John Misty, Quincy Jones or Brian Wilson.

The first single from the release is ‘No Silver Lining’, which Nick suggests is: ‘a song that does its best to argue that we should maintain our optimism, even in the face of a world that suggests optimism never pays off. It’s somewhere between a love song from an optimist to a pessimist, and a work of self-help, depending on what time of day I listen to it…’

For this song and the remainder of the album Nick has drawn on a diverse and disparate array of influences. Of his musical influences, he says: ‘While I don’t think I’ve been a slave to any one example, I’ve certainly drawn on the canonic examples of Leonard Cohen or Nick Drake, trying to drive a deep and reflective channel with my lyrics, and move them as close to poetry as I’m able to do… which is perhaps odd, given that I started off in music wanting to work in the My Bloody Valentine tradition of wanting to obliterate the lyric…’

‘I’ve also been inspired by the quiet examples of singers who’ve laboured in obscurity and quiet domesticity–like Sibylle Baier singing into a tape recorder after work just for herself, or Anne Briggs who chose to live a life away from the microphone…’

Tracks from ‘Minerva’ will be accompanied by videos edited from old films that have lapsed out of copyright: ‘In the case of No Silver Lining, it’s shows a woman waking up, removing a skull from a cupboard and throwing it out of the window, only to find it’s returned to the same place. Which is pretty much a good analogy of the circuit this song is trying to break…’

‘Minerva’, the 9-track debut album from Nick Craft is available from Bandcamp and online retailers.
