A FEW WORDS
Having reformed in 2025 after a 30-year hiatus, Eora/Sydney’s cult psychedelic rock band Drop City have today fully realised their return with the thrilling single ‘Alive’.
Produced by Liam Judson (Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Cloud Control) and the band, ‘Alive’ is a joyous, sun-drenched anthem, driven by a delightful rolling rhythm and bouncing bassline. The choruses exude glorious euphoria as the organ lifts the song into a full-blown celebration, enriched by expressive lead guitar and splashing tambourine.
Frontman Matthew J. Tow provides insight behind the track’s inspirations:
“This one had been kicking around for a bit. It was originally inspired by a track I was working on with Collin Hegna from The Brian Jonestown Massacre. I decided to create something new from the skeleton. I wanted to get cosmic, like most songs throughout my life; if they aren’t about someone, they’re usually some sort of big cosmic conundrum.”
Accompanying the release is the charming animated music video produced by longtime collaborator Simon Killalea (Sidewinder, The Fauves, Decoder Ring), who also designed the track’s artwork.
Formed in Eora/Sydney in 1993, Drop City established themselves as one of Australia’s most respected cult psychedelic rock bands. Across their initial run, they released five albums, toured Australia, the UK, Canada, and the United States, played Big Day Out twice, Meredith Music Festival, and shared stages with The Stone Roses, Stereolab, Yo La Tengo, Manic Street Preachers, Swervedriver, Luna, Powderfinger, You Am I, Hoodoo Gurus, and The Posies. Their iconic music was even released internationally via Sub Pop Records.
Drop City reformed in 2025 after a 30-year hiatus to play live and celebrate the seminal vinyl reissue of their classic album ‘Magic Transistor Radio’. The reunion shows sold out, drew rave reviews, and saw the reissue charting at #44 on the ARIA Australian Artist Albums Chart and #9 on the AIR Independent Albums Chart.
Now firmly re-established as an active recording and touring force, ‘Alive’ marks Drop City’s first major studio release in decades. “It’s all mad, it’s all weird, all of the time… So what do you do? Get the band back together again; that’s what!” concludes Tow.
