A FEW WORDS

Back in 2022…
Murray and Lizzie hung with Josh Hardy and the boys from The Chats around their ‘Splendour In The Grass / Mud’ Festival performances.

After discussing guitars (and. naturally, the weather) they got talking about The Soul Mover’s heritage. Lead singer, and Soul Mover, Lizzie (with Deniz Tek of Radio Birdman) explained how she and Deniz formed The Soul Movers back in 2008 while living in The US.

Chat’s guitarist Josh Hardy shared his passion for Deniz’s guitar playing and the sounds of the late 1960’s and 70’s saying how inspirational he was, and being thankful that Deniz had brought the “Detroit rock” fun, vibe and sound (think The Stooges/ MC5/ Sonic Rendezvous Band) to Sydney’s Oxford Fun House back in 1978 (influencing a generation of iconic Aussie bands from The Saints to The Sunnyboys).
Fan Fact: Who knew that Brad Sheppard (Hoodoo Gurus) was President of The Radio Birdman Fan club back in the day!?

To cut the backstage banter short, an idea was formed around a musical collaboration that would “build a bridge” connecting the current popular resurgence in Aussie rock, and punk-rock, with the originators of that sound.

The result was You-Turn, penned by Lizzie & Murray, played by The Soul Movers with Josh from The Chats providing extra red-hot guitar and co-produced by Rob Younger (Radio Birdman/The New Christs).

Recorded across two studios in Brisbane (Recordworks) and Sydney (Zen Sound) and mixed by Geoff Lee, Jason Millhouse and Stewart Geddes (Studios 301) then mastered by Ben Feggans, “You-Turn” is the resulting product of mutual respect for the guitar gods of rock, smoke and fire. Featuring high voltage drums and bass, a vocal that gives The Runaways a good “go for their money” and with a guitar cluster-fest to end all guitar duels between three true masters the damage is done. If “YouTurn” doesn’t throw up enough muscle-car-fuelled-excitement to turn up the power on any movie car chase scene you could possibly imagine

Shooting the clip, Murray’s and Lizzie further indulged their passion for analogue by showing off their pinball wizard skills (Jason Millhouse still holding the high score by a long shot!) and jumping around Murray’s Marshall stack – well, just for the hell of it.

The dream continues for “You-Turn”. George Miller, of Mad Max fame, had a red-hot listen to it after production wrapped in 2023. With the editing for the next in line (Mad Max… five?) due to finish towards the end of this year, they couldn’t sit on such a fun ride for another month so decided to kick off 2024 bye blasting out of the gates and releasing a track that would undoubtedly have Max head bangin’down the Hume and into the great beyond.

Enjoy the ride folks – and don’t get done for speeding!!
